The march of major live poker tournaments going online continues, this time, with the World Poker Tour. This one is a bit different, though, as the WPT has created both a new online-only event, not related to anything that was previously planned to be live, and has made it an official part of the Main Tour. The $3,500 WPT OnlinePoker Open Main Event will be held on the partypoker US Network in New Jersey December 27-29.

This is the first time a World Poker Tour online event in New Jersey will count as a Main Tour event. This means the winner gets their name on the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup, becomes a member of the WPT Champions Club, and will be awarded a $15,000 seat into the WPT Tournament of Champions. The WPT OnlinePoker Open Main Event also awards Player of the Year points like any regular Tour event would.

Reasons to Enter a World Poker Tour Event; Brief History of the WPT. The World Poker Tour, otherwise known as the WPT, is a huge poker tournament brand that hosts many different poker tournaments around the world. The World Poker Tour was founded on May 27th, 2002 in the United States.
Though players do need to be physically located in New Jersey to participate in the tournament, they do not have to play on partypoker’s New Jersey client. BorgataPoker.com and BetMGMPoker.com are also part of the partypoker US Network and open to players in the Garden State, so people who have accounts on one of those sites don’t have to create a new account on partypoker.
The World Poker Tour is encouraging everyone to make sure funds are in their account ahead of time to pay for the $3,500 buy-in, just in case there are any issues. Players may deposit funds from anywhere; they do not have to wait until they are in New Jersey to do so, if they plan on traveling from out of state.
The last live World Poker Tour stop to be run was the WPT Rolling Thunder at the Thunder Valley Casino Resort in California March 7-10. It was essentially that week that shutdowns started to be put in place around the country because of the COVID-19 pandemic. All domestic live events since then, starting with the WPT at Venetian that was scheduled to begin March 13 have been postponed or outright cancelled.

Smaller, regional events have started to get back up and running around the world, but neither the World Poker Tour nor the World Series of Poker have ventured back into casinos. The World Series of Poker did, however, just announce a new hybrid $10,000 Main Event that will start online and conclude with a live competition.
The European Poker Tour is the only major tour that has resumed live tournaments to any degree. The EPT Sochi (Russia) Main Event attracted 637 entries in early October.
If the World Series of Poker is acknowledged for introducing world championship poker, the World Poker Tour can be credited for revolutionizing the game through live tournaments. The WPT is not only a source of entertainment but is also educational especially for novice players.
Take the case of the 'hole cam,' a lipstick sized gadget. This innovation was introduced during the 2003 World Poker Tour. The hole cam allows the audience to view the hole cards of the players adding a dramatic appeal by revealing possible strategies based on the bets and bluffs of the players.
Aside from the hole camera, the WPT hosts also serve as a source of information for new poker players. Each time the hosts speaks to the crowd using certain poker terms, a drop-down box is flashed on the screen explaining the terms so that newcomers will have a better understanding of their definition. This is the main reason why the WPT was able to generate the interest of millions of fans and players all over the world.
WPT elimination rounds are conducted annually starting from May to April of the following year, culminating with the world championship poker event at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. A total of sixteen qualifying matches are conducted at different locations around the world. The winner of each tournament will converge for the Main Event.
The final round of the elimination tournaments are shown live and the winners, aside from the cash prize, will get a $25,000 entry fee to the WPT Championships.

The qualifying tournaments are just one way of gaining entry to the WPT Final Event. Likewise, players can gain outright entry by paying the $25,000 fee or by competing in different satellite tournaments for a lower buy-in cost that will serve as prepayment for the entry fee. In fact, the Bellagio has its own satellite tournament conducted weeks prior to the final event with the winner getting a prepaid entry fee.
World Poker Tour Circuit Events
The final table of the World Poker Tour championship round is televised from the Bellagio and can be seen by a live audience. Since this world championship poker event began, the prize for the winners has increased tremendously. In the 2006 edition alone, the prize pool was expected to be over $12 million with the winner pocketing more than $4 million.
Involving No Limit Texas Hold'em, the WSOP was the pet project of Stephen Libscomb, who serves as the CEO of WPT Enterprises, the firm managing the World Poker Tour.
