' White Swan '; NATO reporting name: Blackjack) is a supersonic, variable-sweep wing heavy strategic bomber designed by the Tupolev Design Bureau in the Soviet Union in the 1970s. It is the largest and heaviest Mach 2+ supersonic military aircraft ever built and next to the experimental XB-70 Valkyrie in overall length. The Tu-160 is the largest and heaviest military aircraft ( beside Transports ) currently in existence. The Tupolev Tu-160 entered service in 1987 and 16 aircraft are currently in service with the Russian Air Force. Development The Soviet Union started in 1967 a competition.

The Air Force at one point sought to prosecute Tupolev for allegedly rushing the inadequate designs of the Tu-22M and the Tu-160 into service. This was compounded by the government bureaucracy, which hampered the provision of spare parts to allow the servicing of the Tu-22M.
